As an advisor to philanthropists on the topics of overseas donation and social investment I have observed two clear camps. The first is the ‘I get better bang for buck when donating overseas than domestically’ camp. The second is the ‘I don’t know how much actually ever gets to where I want it to go’ camp.

Stanford Social Innovation Review visits design thinking

Designers have traditionally focused on enhancing the look and functionality of products. Recently, they have begun using design techniques to tackle more complex problems, such as finding ways to provide low-cost healthcare throughout the world. Businesses were the first to embrace this new approach—called design thinking—and nonprofits are beginning to adopt it too.

ACO establishes an Instrument Fund

The Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) has established an Instrument Fund to offer investors the opportunity to participate in the ownership of a bank of historic stringed instruments. The instruments will be lent by the Fund to the ACO, for use by its musicians in concerts and recordings in Australia and around the world. The first acquisition is a violin by Antonio Stradivari, who is universally acknowledged as the greatest violin maker of all time.
